Distant Waves Summary and Response Essay

Draft #1

In the text Distant Waves by Susanne Wayne, the story takes place in Houston St., New York City in 1898. When a family encounters Nickola Tesla, all the sudden they find themselves caught in the middle of an earthquake that was originated from Tesla’s vibration machine. Tesla believed that it would be wrong to make profit out of the use of natural resource that benefited the people. Tesla wasn’t normal.

Moreover, Tesla never saw himself making profits out of his inventions, all Tesla wanted was to help the people. By utilizing natural resources Tesla created innovative ways to bring electricity through various parts of the United States. As shown in the text,” The electricity was derived from the power of Niagara Falls, not from me. I do not believe in making money from naturally occurring resources. It should be free, like water or air. For few to claim. It as theirs to sell is wrong.” Although Tesla was an American citizen, his way of thinking was not “American.” Tesla was the opposite of a capitalist, believing that these are basic needs that could be harvested from natural resources, it should be free and available to everyone. Tesla wasn’t a common American his ideas and believes led him to put his focus past the profitable view, he was more focused on how beneficial it would be. If I were put in such scenario, with Tesla’s skills and abilities, I believe that it would’ve been a much different outcome. Just of thinking the abilities that Tesla had, it makes me question myself. As shown in the text, “But your thinking is not American, she clarified “You are not capitalist.” Like any immigrant that comes to the United States with the American dream in mind to make money and have a better life. Tesla wasn’t a regular immigrant. In today’s world many wish to have such skills and abilities to turn it into profits for themselves.

Nevertheless, like any great inventor Tesla always wanted to outdo himself. Tesla intelligence was sometimes reckless and limitless. In many cases he’s put his life and others at risk. As shown in the text,” Those who had been inside in restaurants and stores stumbled out wearing dazed expressions to see what had happened.” Clearly showing how past his intelligence, Tesla doesn’t take into consideration the lives of the public and the effects that his inventions could have on the averment and his surroundings. In some cases, Tesla could foresee the power that some of his inventions held. As stated in the text, how the earthquake was cause by one of Tesla’s inventions. It’s just crazy to believe that he invented a machine with the capacity to create an earthquake, in my opinion I still question how it was possible for Tesla to build such machine with the technology that he had. I think that in today’s world its quite hard to accomplish such task, even with the advanced technology we have today. Quite frankly, it’s hard to believe that such man like Tesla was able to accomplish such inventions.

On a final note, Tesla exploited natural resources to its maximum to benefit the people and his believe that such resources should be free and available to everyone, made him different from other “Americans”. It seems that such character like Tesla was not normal, not using such skills and abilities to make wealth for himself and by creating such reckless innovations that could put others’ lives at risk. Leaving us wanting a piece of his skills.

Tesla the Uncommon Capitalist

In the text Distant Waves by Suzanne Weyn, the story takes place in Houston St., New York City in 1898. When a family encounters Nickola Tesla, all the sudden they find themselves caught in the middle of an earthquake that was originated from Tesla’s vibration machine. Tesla believed that it would be wrong to make profit out of the use of natural resource that benefited the people. Tesla always thought that such services that originated from the use of natural resources should be free to the public since they originally came from nature.

Moreover, Tesla never saw himself making profits out of his inventions, all Tesla wanted was to help the people. By utilizing natural resources Tesla created innovative ways to bring electricity through various parts of the United States. As shown in the text, “The electricity was derived from the power of Niagara Falls, not from me. I do not believe in making money from naturally occurring resources.
